December 2018

04 December 2018

December is upon us and so far the harvest has been rather different from previous years. With the push to get the grain to sites closer on the rail line the freight rates paid to the farmers has increased and as such we have seen a lower than usual intake, and, with the Barley being ready before the Canola this year the usual program has been turned on its head.

We have had plenty of hours so far but after the storm that went through last night there has been no power since 6pm yesterday, so today is a day off. Thank goodness for the solar on our roof and the portable solar panel on the windscreen for when the house is in shade.

Another week, more grain and, some hot weather so not much new to report. The last few farmers are on their Barley and so it is wheat, wheat and more wheat. So at this stage there is only a few weeks work left unless they want us to stay back or return after Christmas for the clean up.

It's been a while since we posted and so, after a quick trip to Perth for Christmas Day with the family, we made our way back to Bruce Rock today. It's nearly the end of the harvest and with only a week or so to go it is almost time to think about next years adventures.

Early morning light across the site and Bruce Rock township on Christmas Eve.

In the meantime however, this week will see the last of the incoming grain, some clean up and the start of the outloading from the big "G" type shed in the middle of the photo above, and to top it off, the weather is going to be in the mid to high 30's for the week and 40 deg C on the weekend.

Mark Twain once said "...years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do that by the things you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbour. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover." - and so we will.
